Bringing Refugee Craftsmanship To 69b

This season we’re proud to stock MADE51’s beautiful artisan jewellery and crafts, made by refugees forced to flee violence and leave their homes and livelihoods. MADE51 helps refugees build sustainable livelihoods utilising their heritage craftsmanship and culture. It is made possible by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency

When refugees flee, they carry with them the traditions, skills, knowledge and craftsmanship. From the leather work of the Tuareg to the fine embroidery of the Syrians, MADE51 creates a way for refugees to sustain artistic traditions. MADE51 creates opportunities for refugees to earn income through dignified work that makes use of their valuable skills, traditions, and heritage.

"I get paid for the work that I do and I am able to earn a living for my children. That's the biggest positive change I have achieved. The fact that I am able to afford food for my family also makes me very proud. It has given a boost to the women in my community, now they want to earn too."
Bibi, Afghan refugee in Pakistan

Bringing refugee craftsmanship to the world

Refugees with artisanal skills or interests are linked with social enterprises in the artisan sector that work near the refugees’ communities.  Together they develop unique product lines that make up the MADE51 collection.

MADE51 provides seed funding, technical support and a global marketing platform for the refugee-made products.

"Rather than viewing millions of refugees across the globe as a burden, MADE51 sees untapped talent and potential that, if unlocked, can directly benefit displaced women, men, and children, as well as host communities and local businesses."
Kelly Clements, UN Deputy High Commissioner For Refugees
