Supporting Hackney Night Shelter This Black Friday
It’s that time of year again, when our mailboxes are overloaded with discount offers and invitations to buy buy buy! At 69b we will never take part in Black Friday discounting, because we believe it encourages over-consumption, increases emissions from transportation and generates waste.
Instead of pushy promotions, we will donate all our profits from Black Friday to a local charity. This year we are supporting Hackney Night Shelter, providing emergency accommodation every night of the year.
Why Hackney Night Shelter?
Hackney Night Shelter are raising money to open a new women's shelter in 2026, to provide a safe place to sleep and a route out of homelessness for over 100 women in our borough.
Homelessness has reached record levels in London with more than 13,000 people sleeping rough in 2024/5. Women experiencing homelessness are particularly underrepresented in street count figures because they are more likely to experience hidden homelessness, such as sleeping on buses to avoid the risk of violence and abuse.
"It was my lifeline and I got to get my head together in a safe place"
Michelle, former guest, a 37 year woman who had been staying in hostels while looking for work after a relationship breakdown and was at risk of sleeping rough when she ran out of money. After staying at Hackney Night Shelter for a few nights she found a job and accommodation.
Another guest was a 54 year old woman who was terrified of sleeping rough when she faced homelessness after a breakup. While staying at Hackney Night Shelter she was able to secure a job. After a few weeks she was thrilled to move on positively to her own place in supported housing, saying "You start to get your life back and its a step in the right direction".
