69b wouldn't be what it is without its staff. Find out more about the people (and dogs!) behind 69b here.

Emma – Owner

What attracted you to work for 69b?

I bought 69b because I love everything it stands for, and having worked in high street fashion for many years I want to do something to make a positive change.

What’s your favourite brand? And why?

Having checked through my 69b purchases it would have to be Conditions Apply. Their pieces are unusual, eye catching and they have a real sense of fun. The fabrics are luxurious and their clothes are hand crafted, celebrating imperfections and individuality. Plus they're local, and their supply chain is fully Sedex compliant.

What's your most prized 69b purchase?

I have been living in my People Tree Maisie Stripe jumper. The stripes appeal to my inner goth, I LOVE the big sleeves and it's incredibly warm.

Favourite thing about working for 69b?

I'm proud to work with such a great team of passionate, intelligent people who have made me feel so welcome.

Emily – Manager

What attracted you to work for 69b?
I wanted to work for a small, independent business and NOT a big, corporate (fast fashion) one.
What’s your favourite brand? And why?
A relatively new one for 69b, ilk& Ernie. Brighton based, they only use fabric that is dead stock and would go to landfill otherwise. Everything they do is super cool!
What's your most prized 69b purchase?
My Marimekko dress. I've had it for a couple of years now and still love wearing it. It is also trans-seasonal so I can wear it all year round!
Favourite thing about working for 69b?
Myself and Emma do the buying for the store, and (pre COVID, of course) this means the opportunity to travel to meet our brands. It's so amazing meeting our brands face to face, and seeing the collections 6-12 months ahead :)

Sarah-Sustainability Officer

What attracted you to work for 69b?

The ethics of the business. I have been passionate about ethical fashion since my first job in retail after finishing University ten years ago. When a job came up at 69b I couldn’t wait to apply and was lucky enough to get the job.

What is your favourite brand? And why?

It’s a difficult one! We have so many brands doing amazing work and creating the most beautiful clothes, but one of my top ones has to be Thinking Mu. You will always find me wearing at least one item of theirs. Their products are also completely traceable with SKU codes on their swingtags which show their carbon footprint, fabric origins and have advice on after care.

What is your most prized 69b purchase?

My Thinking Mu Hebe Jacket, not only does it go with everything I own it is also waterproof and windproof making it perfect for wearing around London.

Favourite thing about working for 69b?

Being able to continuously grow with the business constantly improving our sustainability and social impact.

Harriet – Sales Assistant

What attracted you to work for 69b?

I had been volunteering locally for a while. I was drawn to the shop when looking for a permanent job in the area. I got a role at 69b and moved here! That was 4 years ago. Now Hackney is my home.

What is your favourite brand? And why?

I think People Tree because they are pioneers. Their stuff is affordable, and I feel they paved the way for a new kind of thinking and way of doing things.

What is your most prized 69b purchase?

I don’t know if I have one stand-alone purchase! I have a beautiful moth-eaten jumper by People Tree that I need to darn… any tips Sarah? Mara?

Favourite thing about working for 69b?

Definitely being part of the local community and being part of a new way of doing things. Thinking sustainably is vital. I feel lucky to be surrounded by people who feel the same.

Matthew – Sales Assistant

What attracted you to work for 69b?
Walking past the shop, it always gave off such a lovely vibe, and I wasn’t wrong. I love their ethics when it comes to the brands they stock and the way they treat their staff.
What is your favourite brand? And why?
Oh that’s easy... Dedicated! Pretty much every item that catches my eye is usually
Dedicated. The fit is always on point and they have a fantastic mix of everyday basics to garments for a good night out.
What is your most prized 69b purchase?
Although I’m a Dedicated fan, I think my prized purchase would
have to be my white high waisted Just Female jeans with cream panels. I’m a big believer that clothing doesn’t have a gender and if you feel good in something, then no one can tell you otherwise, and boy do I feel good when I wear these jeans. Pair them with a dark top and I instantly just feel like I’m the epitome of fashion! Who doesn’t want to feel like that, right?
Favourite thing about working for 69b?
I love the interaction with customers and being part of the local community. After a year of covid, it’s so nice to be able to have actual conversations with other adults again. That, and constantly eyeing up what I want to add to my wardrobe next.

Mara - Sales Assistant

What attracted you to work for 69b?

I had been working in costume for film and became aware of how wasteful the textile/fashion industry is. I wanted to have a first hand experience on how a business that cares about these issues operates.

What is your favourite brand? And why?

That is a difficult question! It really depends on what type of garment I'm looking for and their specific function, there is a lot of aspects to consider. CUS is at the top of my list, their designs are elegant but minimal, making them very easy to wear them casually or dress them up with accessories. They are designed and produce in Barcelona (promoting local economy and making sure all lines of production follow EU standards), they use natural dyes (from non-edible agricultural or herbal industry waste), their textiles are organic/recycled and eco-friendly (sustainably produced/sourced), they are GOT Certified, and their price range is fairly accessible.

What is your most prized 69b purchase?

A Beaumont Organic Shirt Dress. I've had it for 6 years and I still feel  happy when I wear it, I haven't been particularly careful at how I wash it and it still holds its true colours and beauty!

Favourite thing about working for 69b?

Conversations with my colleague Sarah! she is studying Environmental Management and always has some great jewels of information. She is helping build the blog in our website on what are the important questions about fashion, you should head there and read it.

Ozzy - Head of Security

When he's not ensuring the office garden foxes are behaving, Ozzy is making sure the dogs waiting in line for their Climpsons coffees are socially distancing.

Frank - Office Manager

Frank ensures everyone gets to work on time and is keeping in line with all their important deadlines - unless he decides a tummy rub is more important....

Beau - Therapy Dog / Wellbeing Coordinator

Beau works hard to make sure everyone is ok and is always on call for cuddles. He most enjoys snuggling in his bed between Emily and Sarah's chairs making him easily accessible for hugs.
