MADE51

HANDMADE

Handcrafted by Congolese refugees living in Kenya from Jacaranda wood. The wood is locally and sustainably sourced and takes the shape of a dove, symbolising peace. The skilful freehand carving technique used to carve the dove is passed from one generation to the next.

Congolese wood carving has been used for generations to create a wide variety of intricately made objects, including masks and ceremonial objects, as well as every day functional items. These carvings often reflect the rich cultural traditions, spiritual beliefs, and social practices of the different ethnic groups and communities in the DRC.

About MADE51

Bringing refugee craftsmanship to the world

MADE51 helps refugees build sustainable livelihoods utilising their heritage craftsmanship and culture. It is made possible by UNHCR, the UN Refugee AgencyUNHCR is a global organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.

MADE51 creates opportunities for refugees to earn income through dignified work that makes use of their valuable skills, traditions, and heritage. Working in collaboration with an ecosystem of partners, MADE51 brings refugee craftsmanship and stories to the world.

"Rather than viewing millions of refugees across the globe as a burden, MADE51 sees untapped talent and potential that, if unlocked, can directly benefit displaced women, men, and children, as well as host communities and local businesses."
Kelly Clements, UN Deputy High Commissioner For Refugees

Refugees with artisanal skills or interests are linked with social enterprises in the artisan sector that work near the refugees’ communities.  Together they develop unique product lines that make up the MADE51 collection. MADE51 provides seed funding, technical support and a global marketing platform for the refugee-made products.
